Painting Your Case Fans

July 3, 2007
By: Collin

What you will need:
Any kind of computer fan
Primer, and your choice of paint
needle nose pliers
masking or paint tape

Summary:
In this tutorial I will show you how to easily paint any kind of case
fan for that perfect color scheme!

STEP 1:

I started off with a simple 92mm case fan.. pretty generic

STEP 2:

First, you'll want to flip the fan over and take the sticker off to expose the little
plastic retaining washer

STEP 3:

Be careful when removing the washer as to not bend it out of recognition.
These little guys are pretty durable, but I would recommend a small flat
head screwdriver and some pliers

STEP 4:

Now, take the washer off and keep it in a safe spot! Don't loose it!

STEP 5:

Next, wrap the fans shaft in tape to preserver the lube. You don't want to
thicken this shaft up with paint or the fan might not spin properly

STEP 6:

For my paints I chose an auto primer with some orange fluorescent paint. In
most cases though choose paint all by the same brand as it will work better
together (The selection is pretty limited where I'm at).

STEP 7:

To get the best finish, hit the fan up with some primer. If you really don't care you
can skip this step and go straight to the color, but I don't recommend it.

STEP 8:

Now for a few coats of bright fluorescent orange

STEP 9:

After the paint dries you can take your tape off the shaft and slide the fan back
into place. Then slide on the retaining washer and make sure it is snug in place
by giving the fan blades a little tug. After that, you're all done!
